Input Tax Credit (ITC) – Conditions to Claim

Input Tax Credit (ITC) lets you set off GST paid on purchases against GST on sales.

Basic Conditions

  1. You are registered – ITC only for registered persons
  2. Supplier has filed – Supplier must have filed GSTR-1; the invoice must appear in your GSTR-2B
  3. Invoice has GST – Valid tax invoice with GSTIN
  4. Goods received – For goods, you must have received them
  5. Not blocked – Certain items (e.g. motor vehicles for personal use) don’t get ITC

Time Limit

Claim ITC by the earlier of:

  • Due date of GSTR-3B for September of next FY, or
  • Date of filing annual return

Common Mistakes

  • Claiming without matching invoices in GSTR-2B
  • Claiming on non-business purchases
  • Missing the time limit
