Wholesale vs Retail Pricing – Margin Difference
Last updated:
Wholesalers and retailers price differently. Understanding both helps whether you buy or sell.
Wholesale Price
- Price at which manufacturer/wholesaler sells to retailer
- Lower margin (e.g. 3–8%) because volume is high
- Sold in bulk (cartons, dozens)
- B2B, often with credit terms
Retail Price
- Price at which retailer sells to consumer
- Higher margin (e.g. 10–25%) because volume per unit is low
- Sold in small quantities (1, 2, 5)
- B2C, often cash
Flow
Manufacturer → Wholesaler (small margin) → Retailer (add margin) → Consumer
Example: Cost ₹80 → Wholesale ₹85 (6%) → Retail ₹100 (18% on ₹85)
